As the first personnel to be deployed in the wake of a catastrophic event, National Guard dual-status technicians are routinely assigned to hazardous locations where their health may be at risk. Earthquakes, hurricanes, floods and other disasters can not only cause physical devastation, but can also release dangerous contaminants into the environment, contaminants that put both the victims and responders at risk. Every disaster has its own set of risks, and strict adherence to health precautions must be instilled in each National Guard member called upon to provide relief in the most trying of circumstances.
